I hate this state sometimes

Bill would let counties raise gas tax 6 cents for roads

What do you do when gas prices are already nearly $2.50 a gallon? Raise gas taxes! Okay, the bill probably won't pass, but it's just insane to start such a regressive tax now, especially when at the same time the governor is proposing tax cuts.

An added tax is one way to decrease the use of imported oil.

Just wait until they (the Jeffco legislators) find out about congestion fees.

Hmm, you you pay a 6 cent per gallon carbon offset tax? Money to be given to deserving civic groups to plant trees and what not?

The secret agenda behind this bill is to provide public transit funding for urban areas. Current gas taxes are earmarked for roads and bridges only. Too bad we can't be honest about the need for public transit, but this is Alabama.

Well, if that is the secret agenda, expect some opposition from the rural voters.

The rural counties get to use funds to improve their back roads, which need the help. The urban counties, which likely don't have as many poorly maintained roads, can choose to use the funds for public transit -- something they can't do with current gas taxes.
