Not optimistic

Bills to be introduced to set statewide vote to rewrite constitution

Maybe the breaking of St. Roy will clear the way to doing something about the World's Worst Constitution, but the forces of reflexive conservatism are still very strong.

dont think its Moore that you have to worry about. I'd be more worried that the AEA will block it since it might lead to unearmarked tax revenue, ALFA is not too in favor of home rule and so on. Lot of big dogs in this fight.

In 2004, voters rejected a proposal to hold a convention after opponents argued that it was a veiled attempt to raise taxes and that proponents wanted to remove God from the constitution.

I though that amendment simply wanted to take out racist language and did not call for a constitutional convention. However, I know that the Birmingham News would never publish a story that is poorly researched, so I am probably the one who is mistaken.

I'm so sick of hearing from my local reps that I shouldn't worry my purty little head about it -- the Legislature'll rewrite that goldang constitution 'cause those dadblasted special interests would take over a convention. That would be whichever special interest groups my local reps don't like, of course. And I'm sure we'll get a new constitution any day now. Uh huh. My face is starting to turn blue from holding my breath, but my reps promised they'd do it, and they wouldn't lie. Right?
