Only 87 murders!

Mayor calls city's crime ranking erroneous

Yeah, Birmingham isn't the sixth-most-dangerous city in America. No way. The authors were just drumming up sales from the millions of people across the country dying for Birmingham-related statistical studies.

The book in question is Morgan-Quitno's "City Crime Rankings" 13th edition. They take FBI statistics and re-arrange them into rankings. The FBI advises that doing so is not very meaningful because of the many differences between the contexts in which crimes occur and how they are reported. Our metro area, for example, is not included in the report because Hoover does not provide uniform statistics to the FBI.

Kincaid was right in everything he said. I don't think, however, that he is right to say it. Far better to fulfill his promises to the department, get the problem (which is quite real) under control, and then let the facts speak for themselves, even if they are poorly translated by Morgan-Quitno.
