Charles has updated his post. Nothing much more to add, except that (as I indicated in an email to him) he's more or less correct about the "us versus them" attitude of my post. When it comes to violence, the real battle is the center versus the extremes on both sides. I tend to think that (in the United States, anyway) the extreme right is both more powerful and more violent.
