Whee, paranoia!
Shelby schools may research volunteers
I don't see any problem with background checks of volunteers, I suppose. But is there any evidence that there have been problems? I mean, any at all? There certainly isn't in this story.

Are an increasing number of non-whites volunteering?
does sound like a cheap way to get interpreters (sign, spanish, farsi, etc) in class and given the demographic of who volunteers a great way to get the message out.
From the article, it apears that government types like journalists, don't like to wash their dirty linen in public.
I think we can all agree that the Safety of our Children is not what's driving this idea, but I think at least some of the real cause might be liability issues. This kind of stuff has been around for a while. If I'm not mistaken, the Episcopal church's insurers require that its Sunday school teachers go through some kind of "don't grope, or appear to grope, the kids" training before they can share the word of God. Ten years ago Rolling Reader wanted to run a background check on me, which, like the mom in the story, I found offensive and demeaning. (They didn't ask me to pay for it, however.)
And as Susan said, if they can parlay liability issues into "look how well we're protecting your children!" so much the better.
