Barkley may run in 2010
For instance, charismatic former basketball stars who gave up on the Republicans because George Bush is such a lame President. Charles Barkley officially declared himself a Democrat and is thinking about running for Governor again.
"I'm serious," Barkley said. "I've got to get people to realize that the government is full of it. Republicans and Democrats want to argue over stuff that's not important, like gay marriage or the war in Iraq or illegal immigration. They push those issues because they play well on TV and because they deceive people. When I run - if I run - we're going to talk about real issues like improving our schools, cleaning up our neighborhoods of drugs and crime and making Alabama a better place for all people."This could be really fun. And since it looks more and more like Riley is going to win, 2010 should be an open campaign.

Barkley would make a entertaning candidate, something we seem to be lacking this election.
As governor, he will probably do no worse than what we've had so far.
Charles is great, but the war in Iraq and immigration aren't important issues? Huh?
Would prefer to see Barkley (or even Riley or Baxley) take the lead in pushing reform of the state tax code, a new constituion that gives counties and cities home rule, improved rural water, sewage and fire protection, and rein in payday loan and title loan companies.
GWOT, Iraq, world peace and free ponies for everyone are for the Presidential race in 2008.
I'm not so sure that Barkley thinks that those two issues are unimportant overall, but just not at the crux of what is important to the common Alabamian. The issues that Walt mentioned are a few of the issues that really affect us here at the micro level.
