Another genius idea

Langford urges literacy effort to curtail crime

Larry Langford thinks that the answer to the Birmingham area's skyrocketing murder rate is a "literacy center". As a librarian, I have a certain appreciation for literacy efforts, and heck, it could mean jobs in the field, but I rather doubt that this is going to work as intended.

The only thing that will curtail urban crime is the creation of a truly fascist police state. And we'll all welcome it, even us wimpy liberals.

Ultimately we're just consumers like everyone else and all we want to do is shop at Wal-Mart and buy biggie-sized Big Mac combos at McDonald's without fear of getting mugged while there or having our homes burglarized while we're away from them.

Sure, we're all still for equal rights and freedom of speech and that kind of stuff but these are big screen HDTV's that are being stolen from right out of our very own homes. Fascism is the only solution and we will embrace it.

Is Langford the insane-in-a-good-way councilman who wants to bring the capital of the US to Birmingham?

President of the county commission, and I haven't heard about that one, but basically yes.

Speak for yourself. How about a few generations of decent education and fair domestic policies instead?

How many generations do you think we're willing to wait? We're not asking for much... We'd just like to cut down on the number of stray bullets flying through the neighborhood.

All joking aside, I think we'd be where we ought to be if it weren't for crack cocaine in the cities and now meth in the rural areas. If we could somehow render people immune to addictive substances then the crime rate would drop to near zero overnight.
