Stop the insanity

PACs fueling costly races for state high court

1. 63 percent of the $7.8 million raised by candidates for the Alabama Supreme Court this cycle came from PACs.
2. Candidates for the Alabama Supreme Court have raised more than $48 million since 1993. This is by far the most in the country. Second is Texas with $28 million.

Nonpartisan judicial elections: your time has come.

What? But then there would be no accountability and liberal justices would be appointed by the governor and turn us all into homosexuals. Right?

From this month's RSA newsletter:

The Alabama Supreme Court
By David G. Bronner

Alabamians understand that elections make good people do and say almost
anything to become elected. It is for this reason that most states do not elect their appellate court judges and justices. Alabamians should not want their judges and justices to receive campaign funds; that practice only fosters the image of “politics” as usual. Maybe someday Alabama will correct that shortcoming, but perhaps
not.

Remember the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill in Alaska in 1989?

Exxon is a pro at stalling, and has yet to pay one penny of that jury award. ExxonMobil (they merged in 1998) tried to take advantage of our state too and got caught. In November 2003, a Montgomery jury awarded the state of Alabama $103 million in compensatory damages and $11.8 billion in punitive damages.

The case was appealed and the punitive damages were reduced to $3.5 billion. ExxonMobil appealed the case again to the Alabama Supreme Court which sent the case to mediation. ExxonMobil walked out of the mediation and for two years the Alabama Supreme Court has done nothing!

It is past time for the Alabama Supreme Court to resolve this abuse of the people of Alabama.
