Alabamians raise scores on college-entrance SAT

That's nice, but it doesn't mean a whole lot. Alabama is basically an ACT state. Only the top students take the SAT, because the state schools, and most of the regional ones, accept the ACT. I never took the SAT myself, because I knew I was going to wind up at Alabama or UAB (I wound up going to both schools), so there was no point in expending the time and effort. Unless you're planning on going to a big out-of-state school, or aiming for a scholarship, you don't take the SAT -- only about nine percent of high school seniors in Alabama did this year. I guess it's good that our best students did a little better, but frankly I wasn't worried about them.
